Pirates 8. Marlins 6 (13): Gregory Polanco went 5-for-7 in his fourth major-league game and hit the tiebreaking two-run homer in the top of the 13th as Pittsburgh overcame a ninth-inning collapse in a wild win over host Miami.
Clint Barmes opened the 13th with a single off Mike Dunn (5-4) and Polanco came up two batters later and drilled a 2-2 slider into the seats in right-center for his first career homer. Jeanmar Gomez (1-2) struck out four in four scoreless innings of relief to get the win.
Starling Marte hit a two-run homer, scored three times and tied a career high with four hits for the Pirates, who have won eight of their last 10 meetings with the Marlins. Giancarlo Stanton had three hits and added to his National League-leading homer (18) and RBI (54) totals with a solo shot to right-center in the third.
Pittsburgh got its offense rolling in the opening frame as Polanco led off with a single and Marte hammered a 1-0 inside fastball over the fence in left. Jeff Mathis singled home a run in the second to halve the deficit for Miami, but Marte got back the run in the third as he reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on Andrew McCutchen’s two-out base hit.
Stanton closed the gap in the bottom half with his blast to right-center before Polanco and Marte opened the fifth with singles and scored on Ike Davis’ two-run double that sparked the Pirates’ three-run frame. Pittsburgh's bullpen gave away the four-run bulge in the ninth as Justin Wilson and closer Jason Grilli combined to walk five batters, leading to Ed Lucas’ RBI groundout and a two-run single by Reed Johnson before Mark Melancon walked Casey McGehee with the bases loaded to tie it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The top four batters in the Pirates’ lineup (Polanco, Marte, McCutchen and Davis) combined to go 13-for-24 while the rest of the order went 4-for-30. … Miami LF Christian Yelich was forced to leave in the top of the third due to a strained lower back. ... McCutchen went 2-for-7 to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
