Tigers 2, Astros 0: Max Scherzer tossed eight scoreless innings of three-hit ball to win his fourth straight start as host Detroit extended its winning streak to six games.

Victor Martinez belted a solo homer and Rajai Davis delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the seventh inning as the Tigers beat Houston for the seventh time in the last eight meetings. Scherzer (4-1) struck out nine and walked one to become the first pitcher to fan at least seven in his first seven starts of the season since Mike Mussina in 2003 before Joe Nathan finished up to earn his sixth save.

Jarred Cosart (1-3) was a hard-luck loser, allowing an unearned run on four hits over seven innings to remain winless since his season debut on April 2. The Astros managed only three singles after collecting 11 hits in each of their previous three games.

An error by Houston first baseman Marc Krauss allowed Nick Castellanos to reach in the seventh before Alex Avila drew a walk, and Andrew Romine moved both runners up with a sacrifice. Davis followed with a single to left to plate Castellanos before Cosart averted further damage by inducing Ian Kinsler to ground into an inning-ending double play.

The Astros had two on with one out in the eighth, but Scherzer escaped the threat, striking out Jose Altuve as catcher Avila gunned down Marwin Gonzalez attempting to steal third. Martinez added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning with a two-out blast off reliever Anthony Bass, extending his hitting streak to eight games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers RF Torii Hunter went 2-for-4 to run his hitting streak to 12 games, but 1B Miguel Cabrera had his run halted at 10 contests. ... Astros SS Jonathan Villar extended his hitting streak to five games with his seventh-inning single. ... Martinez struck out in the first inning, marking the first time he took a called third strike since May 21, 2013 - a span of 154 games and 579 at-bats (2013 postseason included).
