Cubs 8, Phillies 3: Ryan Kalish went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and scored twice as host Chicago broke out of its offensive slump to salvage the finale of a three-game series with Philadelphia.
Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run and Emilio Bonifacio drove in a run and scored twice for the Cubs. Chicago roughed up A.J. Burnett (0-1) for eight runs — four earned — on five hits, as the right-hander issued six walks in 5 2/3 innings.
Carlos Villanueva (1-2) gave the Cubs five strong innings, allowing one run on six hits to rebound from two losses in relief in a season-opening series at Pittsburgh. Jimmy Rollins and Domonic Brown each had two hits for the Phillies, who scored two runs in the ninth before Ryan Howard flew out to deep left to strand two runners.
The Cubs, who had scored only eight runs in their first five games, did all of their damage in a pair of four-run frames. They tagged Burnett for four in the first, taking advantage of three walks and getting an RBI triple from Kalish and an RBI double from Starlin Castro.
Center fielder Ben Revere's error set the stage for the Cubs' four-run sixth inning, as he misplayed a fly ball to put Ryan Sweeney on third with one out. Bonifacio beat out an infield single to bring in one run, Kalish doubled home two more and Rizzo tacked on an RBI single against reliever Brad Lincoln.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs' starting pitchers have a combined 1.93 ERA through six games. … Cubs manager Rich Renteria moved Castro to the No. 6 spot in the lineup in hopes of generating RBI chances, and the shortstop rewarded him with a run-scoring double in the first. … Phillies 2B Chase Utley went 1-for-3 with an RBI and has hit safely in all six games this season.
