White Sox 4, Padres 1: Chris Sale tossed a complete-game two-hitter while Paul Konerko homered and had three RBIs as host Chicago beat San Diego to salvage the finale of the three-game set.
Sale (5-0) allowed a homer to Chase Headley and a single to Tommy Medica – both in the fifth inning – during a dazzling 100-pitch performance. The left-hander struck out nine and faced just 28 batters while recording his sixth career complete game and has allowed just two runs and four hits over his last 25 innings.
Konerko hit a homer in the second and added a two-run double in the sixth. Tyler Flowers also homered for Chicago, which had just six hits in the speedy two-hour, eight-minute contest.
Konerko hit a two-out blast in the second off Eric Stults (2-6) to get Chicago on the board. Sale retired the first 12 batters before Headley led off the fifth by drilling a ball well into the stands in left to knot the score.
Flowers put the White Sox back ahead in the bottom of the fifth when he lofted a curveball that barely made it over the fence in left. Konerko drilled a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line in the sixth to make it a three-run margin.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Stults allowed four runs and five hits in six innings while losing his third straight decision. … White Sox rookie 1B Jose Abreu (ankle), who has 15 homers and 42 RBIs, will be activated from the disabled list prior to Monday’s road game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. … San Diego OF Cameron Maybin (calf) sat out the finale after leaving Saturday’s contest.
