Orioles 9, Yankees 5: Ryan Flaherty and Nick Markakis each drove in a pair of runs during a six-run fourth inning as visiting Baltimore knocked New York out of postseason consideration.
David Lough and Adam Jones each added two RBIs while Nelson Cruz singled home a run during a three-run eighth among his four hits for the Orioles (95-63), who improved to 13-5 against New York this season and trail the Los Angeles Angels (98-61) by 2 1/2 games for the best record in the majors. Bud Norris (15-8) allowed three runs and struck out nine in six innings to improve to 4-0 with a 2.74 ERA in his career versus the Yankees, with all four starts taking place since June 21.
Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer in the eighth and finished with three RBIs while Chase Headley went 3-for-4 and scored three times for the Yankees, who failed to qualify for the postseason in back-to-back years for the first time in Derek Jeter’s 20-year career. The retiring 14-time All-Star went 0-for-4 in his second-to-last home game to snap a seven-game hitting streak and Shane Greene (5-4) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Teixeira doubled in a run in the first, Stephen Drew went deep to begin the second and Headley added a solo shot with two outs in the third to give New York a three-run lead before Baltimore sent 11 men to the plate in the fourth. Kelly Johnson drew a one-out walk to load the bases and Flaherty ripped a double to the right-field corner to make it 3-2.
Greene recovered to strike out Caleb Joseph for the second out of the inning, but Markakis dumped a single into shallow right to put Baltimore in front for the first time. Lough followed with a triple to bring Markakis home on the next pitch and Adam Jones capped the outburst one pitch later with a run-scoring bunt single to score Lough and chase Greene while Darren O’Day stranded a pair of runners in the eighth and retired all four batters he faced for his fourth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Baltimore improved to 75-14 when scoring four or more runs, including 35-1 in such games since July 19. … Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters Wednesday that it would be “pretty tough” for OF Jacoby Ellsbury (hamstring) or DH Carlos Beltran (elbow) to play in any of the team’s final four contests. … Norris improved to 9-1 with a 2.85 ERA in 14 starts against the American League East this season.
