Orioles 2, Blue Jays 1: Caleb Joseph extended his home run streak to four games with a two-run shot and Miguel Gonzalez combined with three relievers on a four-hitter as visiting Baltimore captured the rubber match of the three-game series.
J.J. Hardy doubled and scored for the first-place Orioles, who moved five games ahead of both Toronto and the New York Yankees in the American League East. Gonzalez (6-6) allowed one run and four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings as he won for just the second time in eight starts.
Anthony Gose homered for the Blue Jays, who suffered their fifth loss in six contests and fell a half-game behind Kansas City for the second AL wild-card spot. J.A. Happ (8-6) had his five-start unbeaten streak snapped despite yielding only two runs on five hits and recording a career-high 12 strikeouts over eight frames.
After stranding a runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings, Baltimore finally cashed in against Happ in the fourth. Hardy led off with a ground-rule double and scored two batters later as Joseph deposited a 2-0 offering over the left-field wall for his seventh blast of the season and a 2-0 lead.
Toronto left runners at second and third in the bottom half but halved its deficit an inning later, when Gose led off with a homer to right on an 0-1 pitch. Andrew Miller and Darren O'Day each worked a hitless frame before Zach Britton tossed a perfect ninth for his 24th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista went 0-for-3 but drew a walk to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 16 games. ... CF Colby Rasmus recorded Toronto's only extra-base hit - a ground-rule double in the fourth inning. ... Baltimore CF Adam Jones went 0-for-4, striking out a game-high three times.
