Orioles 3, Yankees 2 (10): Nick Hundley ripped a walk-off RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning as host Baltimore outlasted New York in the opener of a three-game series.
Manny Machado led off the Orioles' half of the 10th with a double against Adam Warren (1-5), just the fourth hit of the game for Baltimore. Following a strikeout, Hundley lined a shot into center to plate Machado without a play as the Orioles won for the ninth time in 11 games.
T.J. McFarland (3-2) got the win with a scoreless 10th in relief of Miguel Gonzalez, who limited the Yankees to two runs in eight solid innings. New York starter Hiroki Kuroda nearly matched him by lasting seven frames and giving up two runs on three hits before Dellin Betances retired six straight to get the game to extra innings.
Brian Roberts homered in the top of the second in his first at-bat as a visitor in Camden Yards, where he played 13 seasons, and the Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the third when Kelly Johnson went deep. Kuroda retired the first eight men he faced but struggled through the fourth, when the Orioles tied it.
Steve Pearce was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, moved to third on an infield single and scored on one of Kuroda’s three wild pitches. Another wild pitch set up a sacrifice fly by Chris Davis to make it 2-2 and neither side got a runner to third base again until the game-winning hit.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Yankees acquired veteran LH Jeff Francis from Oakland in exchange for a player to be named later; Francis had been designated for assignment by the Athletics. They also recalled RH Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated RH Jim Miller for assignment. ... Baltimore placed RH Ubaldo Jimenez (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list and recalled RH Kevin Gausman from Triple-A Norfolk. ... The Orioles are 9-3 in extra-inning affairs and have won four straight.
