Rangers 5, Athletics 1: Martin Perez tossed seven solid innings to win his sixth straight start while Mitch Moreland and Alex Rios homered as visiting Texas claimed sole possession of first place in the American League West.
Jurickson Profar ripped a go-ahead RBI double in the fifth inning and A.J. Pierzynski added a two-out run-scoring single to cap the three-run frame. Five players collected two hits and scored a run for the Rangers, who snapped a modest two-game skid.
Jed Lowrie had a sacrifice fly while Yoenis Cespedes and Josh Donaldson each had two hits for the Athletics, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end.
Perez (9-3) evened his mark against Oakland at 2-2 after allowing one run on eight hits while striking out five.
After Moreland's 22nd homer of the season - and fifth versus Oakland - in the fourth inning forged a 1-1 tie, Profar gave Texas the lead in the fifth by plating Craig Gentry with a double off the right-field wall. Profar scored on Adrian Beltre's groundout before Pierzynski's blooper to center against Bartolo Colon (14-6) extended the Rangers' advantage.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Donaldson made a spectacular diving catch in foul territory during the sixth inning. The third baseman dove near the tarp stationed along the wall to snare a high pop-up by David Murphy. ... Colon saw his winless streak extend to five starts and fell to 19-8 lifetime against the Rangers after permitting four runs on eight hits in five innings. ... Texas DH Lance Berkman failed to get a hit in two at-bats and is 0-for-6 since returning from left hip inflammation and a surgically repaired right knee. ... Athletics RF Michael Choice collected his first major-league hit with a one-out single in the fifth inning.
