Nationals 6, Phillies 1: Jhonatan Solano’s seventh-inning chopper broke a scoreless tie, kickstarting a five-run outburst as host Washington won the rubber game of a weekend series.

Stephen Strasburg (3-5) went eight innings for the second time in the past three starts, holding Philadelphia to one run on five hits while striking out a season-high nine. The Nationals won for the third time in their past eight contests, pulling within five games of NL East leader Atlanta.

Cole Hamels (1-8) held Washington in check until the seventh, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with six strikeouts. Hamels allowed three hits through the first six innings.

Solano’s chopper to third with the bases loaded was fielded by Michael Young, who threw wildly home to allow Ryan Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche to score the game’s first runs. Steve Lombardozzi followed with a double just inside the right-field line to score two more before Denard Span’s double to left later in the inning brought home Lombardozzi to make it 5-0.

Strasburg finished 2-for-3 at the plate and retired 14 of 15 hitters after Hamels’ leadoff single in the third. He balked home Ben Revere with two outs in the eighth for Philadelphia’s only run.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Lombardozzi finished the series 5-for-12 with four RBIs. … Span’s double extended his hitting streak to seven games. … Hamels has not pitched with a lead since April 7 at Kansas City, and the Phillies have scored only 13 runs in his past 58 1/3 innings on the mound.
