Mets 16, Twins 5: Daniel Murphy went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and John Buck hit a grand slam as visiting New York scored 10 runs over the first two innings in a game that began with a temperature of 34 degrees.
David Wright went 3-for-5 and was the third Met to record four RBIs in the game as New York’s Nos. 1-5 hitters each scored at least twice and combined to drive home 13 runs. Jon Niese (2-0) labored through five innings, allowing five runs – four earned – and five hits to improve to 2-0 against the Twins.
Minnesota starter Vance Worley (0-2) surrendered a career-high nine runs – seven earned – and seven hits, needing 57 pitches to get through one-plus inning. The right-hander was pulled after allowing the first four hitters to reach base in the second.
New York set the stage for its five-run first as each of its first five hitters reached base. Wright’s double to left-center plated Jordany Valdespin and Murphy while Marlon Byrd capped the inning with a two-run single after Wright scored on a fielding error.
Although Minnesota rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning, Wright’s single sparked another five-run frame in the second. After Worley concluded his night with a walk to Ike Davis to load the bases, Buck greeted reliever Pedro Hernandez with his fourth career grand slam to the second deck in left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Buck’s 19 RBIs in his first 10 games with a new club set a major-league record. … Worley became the first pitcher to allow nine runs in an inning or less of work against New York. … With six homers, Buck has more home runs than all of the Mets’ catchers combined last season (five).
