Cardinals 8, Brewers 0: Adam Wainwright tossed his fifth career shutout and helped himself with three hits and two RBIs as host St. Louis posted its third consecutive shutout for the first time since 1988.
Wainwright (2-1) authored the latest in a string of dominant pitching performances by the Cardinals, who have held opponents scoreless for the past 32 innings. Wainwright allowed four hits, tied a career high with 12 strikeouts.
Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo (0-1) surrendered six runs – five earned – on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Brewers had no answer offensively, continuing a stretch of futility in which they have scored three runs or fewer in six of their last eight games.
St. Louis sent 12 hitters to the plate during its seven-run sixth inning as Matt Holliday recorded a two-run single while Allen Craig, Yadier Molina Jon Jay and Wainwright added RBI singles. The Cardinals scored another run on an error.
Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun struck out three times for the second consecutive game. Jean Segura, the National League’s batting-average leader entering Saturday, went 1-for-4 as his average dropped to .406.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Wainwright posted his second career three-hit game at the plate, with the first coming Aug. 22, 2008 at Atlanta. … Milwaukee’s Norichika Aoki went 0-for-4 to end his six-game hitting streak. …Jay snapped a 3-for-17 skid with a 2-for-4 effort.
