Phillies 2, Marlins 1: Laynce Nix delivered a tiebreaking, pinch-hit solo home run in the ninth inning and Roy Halladay collected his 200th career win as visiting Philadelphia took two of three from Miami.
Nix, who replaced Halladay at the plate with one out, crushed a fastball from Jon Rauch (0-2) into the second deck of the right-field stands to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Halladay (1-2) needed only 87 pitches to get through eight innings, allowing a run on five hits in his longest outing in 12 starts.
Jonathan Papelbon worked around a leadoff walk to Placido Polanco to notch his third save in as many chances and remain perfect in nine save opportunities against the Marlins. Rauch took the loss in both games of this series.
Michael Young’s grounder up the middle in the sixth bounced off the glove of Adeiny Hechavarria and into center field, allowing Ryan Howard to score from second. Miami returned the favor in the seventh as Chris Valaika rolled a grounder past a diving Freddy Galvis into left field, plating Justin Ruggiano.
The game remained tied at 1 until the top of the ninth when Nix, who also homered in a similar role against the New York Mets on Wednesday, recorded his second pinch-hit home run in four games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Before running into trouble in the seventh, Halladay threw more than 11 pitches in one of his first six innings. … All three games of this series were tied at 1 going into the ninth inning. … Miami, which has a league-low two home runs, has yet to hit a homer at Marlins Park.
