Dodgers 2, Giants 1: Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out six over seven strong innings while Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp each homered as visiting Los Angeles took the opener of a three-game set.
Ryu (14-7) received meager offensive support for the third straight start, but made it stand up by allowing a run on four hits to win for only the second time in his last six outings. Carl Crawford added three hits for the Dodgers, who remained two games behind Atlanta for the best record in the National League.
Matt Cain (8-10) fell to 3-4 with a 2.36 ERA since the All-Star break despite holding Los Angeles to two runs on seven hits over seven frames. Tony Abreu homered for the second time this season to supply the Giants with their only run.
The Dodgers left the bases loaded in the fourth, but got on the board in the fifth when Puig hammered a first-pitch slider over the fence in right-center. Abreu evened it in the bottom half, but Kemp put Los Angeles back in front on his first home run since July 21, launching an inside fastball into the seats in left-center.
Ryu did not require any more help, setting down eight of the final 10 batters he faced before yielding to Brian Wilson, who struck out a pair during a perfect eighth in his first game back in San Francisco as a member of the Dodgers. Kenley Jansen allowed a one-out single in the ninth, but struck out the last two hitters he faced for his 28th save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Abreu’s home run ended the Dodgers’ 28 2/3-inning scoreless streak. … San Francisco has scored six runs over its last 49 innings and two runs or fewer in five straight games. … Ryu’s 14th victory matched Kazuhisa Ishii (2002) for the second-most wins by a Dodger rookie.
