Blue Jays 2, Astros 1: Colby Rasmus delivered a walk-off single to plate Emilio Bonifacio as host Toronto took three of four from Houston.
Bonifacio led off the ninth with a double against Jose Cisnero (2-2), but reliever Wesley Wright struck out pinch hitter Adam Lind before intentionally walking Edwin Encarnacion. Rasmus followed with a ground ball up the middle to send the Blue Jays to only their third win in the last 11 games.
Melky Cabrera went 3-for-4 while Rajai Davis stole a career-high four bases for Toronto, which improved to 10-4 against the American League West. Casey Janssen (3-0) struck out one during a flawless ninth for the victory.
Toronto stranded three runners through two innings, but broke through in the third when Jose Reyes drew a walk, moved to second on Cabrera’s single and scored on Encarnacion’s sacrifice fly. Brett Wallace crushed rookie Todd Redmond’s only mistake, drilling a 3-1 sinker into the seats in right-center in the fourth to tie it.
The Blue Jays failed to break the tie with one out in the seventh with runners at first and third when Jose Bautista struck out and Rasmus popped out following an intentional walk to Encarnacion. After Davis stole second and took third on a throwing error with two outs the eighth, Toronto was denied again when Rasmus flied to center.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Encarnacion, who finished 1-for-2, went 9-for-12 with two home runs and eight RBIs in this series. … Bautista was ejected by home plate umpire Sam Holbrook for arguing balls and strikes following his seventh-inning strikeout. … Redmond yielded only three hits and fanned a career-high 10 over six frames.
