Yankees 4, Tigers 3 (10): Brett Gardner singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning as host New York snapped Detroit's 12-game winning streak.

Gardner slapped a bases-loaded single off Al Alburquerque (2-3) between third base and shortstop to plate Jayson Nix with the winning run. Gardner's third hit came one inning after closer Mariano Rivera blew the save by surrendering a tying two-run homer to Miguel Cabrera.

Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his Yankee Stadium season debut. Playing in his fourth game since he was suspended for 211 games by Major League Baseball for his role in the Biogenesis scandal, Rodriguez drew a mixed reaction from the crowd in his first at-bat but quickly turned to boos when he struck out to end the inning.

Robinson Cano delivered a two-run double in the third inning and Ichiro Suzuki had three hits. Shawn Kelley (4-1) retired one batter to pick up the win for the Yankees, who halted a four-game skid and avoided dropping back to the .500 mark for the first time since April 13. The game was delayed at the start by 47 minutes due to rain.

New York starter Ivan Nova was in line for the win after striking out seven and allowing one run in seven innings. Detroit's Rick Porcello lasted only five innings and gave up three runs on six hits.

Cabrera, who drove in all three of the Tigers' runs, belted his 34th homer to straightaway center field to send the game into extra innings. It marked the first time Rivera has blown back-to-back saves in a three-day span since April 2005.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cabrera extended his hitting streak to seven games and his RBI streak to four contests. ... Nova worked seven innings for the sixth consecutive start, becoming the first New York right-hander to accomplish that since Mike Mussina in 2003. ... Tigers ace Justin Verlander dismissed allegations by former St. Louis Cardinals slugger Jack Clark that suggested he took performance-enhancing drugs. “It’s moronic,” Verlander said. "Clearly, he doesn't know what he's talking about."
