Reds 1, Phillies 0: Jay Bruce delivered a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth as host Cincinnati downed Philadelphia in the completion of Tuesday’s suspended game.
After Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman (2-0) set Philadelphia down in order in the ninth Tuesday, the scoreless draw was suspended until Wednesday after a 45-minute delay when a heavy downpour made conditions unplayable.
The Reds needed less than 10 minutes to end it in the bottom half when Zack Cozart opened with a single off Phillippe Aumont (1-2) and Joey Votto drew a walk. Brandon Phillips followed with a fly ball that center fielder Ben Revere couldn’t handle in left-center and Bruce followed with a single to right.
Homer Bailey threw 59 of his 89 pitches for strikes over eight innings and matched a career high with 10 strikeouts. The Reds’ 2004 first-round selection faced no more than four hitters in any inning, allowed only two hits and retired the final 13 batters he faced.
Kyle Kendrick was every bit as effective, permitting two hits and two walks over seven scoreless frames. The right-hander yielded a single to Cozart and walk to Phillips in the first, and did not face more than four batters over his last six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The start of the game Tuesday was delayed 1:31 before play was interrupted again in the middle of the ninth. … Tuesday marked the fourth time in the Phillies’ last five games where neither they nor their opponents scored more than one run after eight innings. … Reds CF Shin-Soo Choo drew a walk in the third and Votto drew a walk in the ninth to extend their consecutive-game streaks of reaching base to 14.
