Indians 4, Tigers 3 (10): Mark Reynolds delivered a two-out, pinch-hit single in the 10th inning to give Cleveland a dramatic victory over host Detroit.
Carlos Santana easily scored from second on Reynolds’ grounder to left off Darin Downs (0-1). The victory moved the Indians into a first-place tie with the Tigers in the American League Central.
Cleveland staved off defeat in the ninth when Michael Brantley hit a game-tying, two-out single to left off closer Jose Valverde, who blew his first save in four opportunities with a 29-pitch inning. Joe Smith (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth, Rich Hill retired two batters in the 10th and Cody Allen struck out Matt Tuiasosopo for his first major-league save.
Brayan Pena went 3-for-4 and gave Detroit an early lead with a two-run homer in the second off Cleveland’s Zach McAllister. The Indians tied the score in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Jason Kipnis before Omar Infante’s fourth-inning sacrifice fly gave Detroit a 3-2 edge.
Detroit’s Rick Porcello allowed two runs and four hits in six innings. McAllister allowed three runs (two earned) and eight hits in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: C Yan Gomes had three of Cleveland’s eight hits. … Tigers CF Austin Jackson (hamstring) was out of the lineup after going 0-for-5 on Saturday. … Indians manager Terry Francona elected not to start Reynolds – the AL home run leader with 11 – with Monday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees looming.
