Yankees 14, Indians 1: Robinson Cano led an 18-hit assault with a 4-for-6 effort and five RBIs as visiting New York cruised past Cleveland for the second straight game.
Cano, who went 3-for-4 with two homers and scored four runs in Monday’s 11-6 victory, tallied three extra-base hits – including a two-run homer – and a single Tuesday. The outburst was more than enough for Andy Pettitte (2-0), who allowed five hits - including a solo homer to Asdrubal Cabrera - in seven innings.
Carlos Carrasco (0-1), making his first appearance since 2011 after injuries interrupted his six-game suspension for throwing at the head of Kansas City's’ Billy Butler, was ejected Tuesday after hitting Kevin Youkilis in the shoulder one pitch after Cano’s homer. The right-hander yielded seven runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.
Brett Gardner, who went 4-for-5 and scored three times, put the Yankees on the board in the second with a two-run double after Carrasco allowed three runners to reach with two outs. Five pitches later, Cano ripped a line-drive two-run double over the outstretched arm of center fielder Drew Stubbs to plate two more runs.
Ichiro Suzuki extended the lead to 5-0 with a line-drive solo shot to right and Cano followed with his home run deep into the left-center stands. Youkilis added a two-run shot in the sixth and Lyle Overbay tacked on a solo homer in the eighth before Cano added an RBI double to deep right to increase the bulge to 11-1.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Youkilis, who went 1-for-3 Tuesday, has a hit in every game this season and is batting .367. He became the first Yankee since Bob Watson in 1980 to hit safely in his first eight games with New York. … Carrasco has dropped his last six decisions. … Twelve of the Yankees’ runs came with two outs.
