Nationals 5, Cubs 4 (13): Chad Tracy hit the go-ahead RBI groundout in the 13th inning as visiting Washington overcame Donnie Murphy's two-run homer with two outs in the ninth to claim its third win in the four-game series.
Denard Span greeted Michael Bowden (1-3) with a double to left field to lead off the 13th inning. Span advanced to third on Steve Lombardozzi's sacrifice bunt before coming home on Tracy's grounder up the first-base line.
Washington was in prime position to win the contest four innings earlier - with Stephen Strasburg vying for his second career complete game to boot. After Junior Lake's run-scoring single brought the Cubs within 4-2 in the ninth, Murphy forged a tie by belting a 1-1 curveball over the wall in left for his fourth homer in as many games and eighth in 16 contests.
Ryan Zimmerman homered among his three hits and Lombardozzi led off the seventh by going deep for the first time this season. Craig Stammen (7-5) didn't allow a hit in two scoreless innings of relief and Drew Storen retired the side in the 13th to pick up his third save for the Nationals, who secured their ninth victory in 13 contests.
Brian Bogusevic homered among his three hits for the Cubs, who suffered their ninth loss in 11 outings overall and 16th in 19 tilts at home.
GAME NOTEBOOK: After a two-hour rain delay, Zimmerman's 15th blast in the first inning staked Washington to an early lead before Strasburg doubled the advantage with a spirited at-bat in the second. The hurler fouled off four pitches before depositing a 2-2 cutter from LHP Travis Wood into shallow center field to plate Moore. ... The ninth-inning uprising prevented Wood from suffering his fourth straight loss. The All-Star permitted four runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. ... Washington wraps up a 10-game road trip on Friday by beginning a three-game set against Kansas City. Chicago hits the road on Friday to open a three-game series versus San Diego.
