Cubs 3, Pirates 2: Travis Wood pitched six innings of one-hit ball and Nate Schierholtz blasted a two-run home run as visiting Chicago claimed its first season-opening series victory since 2009.
Wood (1-0) struck out four and walked two, allowing only a double to Clint Barmes in the third inning. Three relievers combined for two perfect innings of relief to bridge the gap to Carlos Marmol, who allowed two runs before getting a strikeout and a game-ending double play to strand the tying run at third.
The Cubs got on the board in the third, when Wood singled with one out, moved to second on David DeJesus' groundout and scored on Starlin Castro's single up the middle.
Schierholtz gave the Cubs some breathing room with his two-run blast to center in the ninth, and the insurance runs proved vital with Marmol turning in his second shaky outing of the series. He was lifted in a save situation in Monday's opener.
Pittsburgh starter James McDonald (0-1) matched Wood for most of the afternoon, limiting the Cubs to one run, two hits and two walks over seven innings with four strikeouts.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Cubs were 2-for-2 with runners in scoring position after going 0-for-13 in that situation over the first two games. … Neither team scored more than three runs in any of the three games in the series, and the squads combined for only 12 runs. … The Cubs travel to Atlanta for a three-game set with the Braves beginning Friday, while the Pirates travel to Los Angeles for three with the Dodgers.
