Braves 6, Nationals 4 (10): Ramiro Pena hit a two-run homer in the 10th inning as visiting Atlanta rallied from a late four-run deficit, improbably extending its winning streak to seven.
The Braves (9-1), who own baseball’s best record, tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning. Justin Upton hit a grounder to third with the bases loaded, but Washington third baseman Ryan Zimmerman’s throw to second sailed into right field as two runs scored to tie the score at 4.
Pena, whose bunt single helped set the stage for the two-run ninth, drilled a 1-0 pitch from Craig Stammen into the seats in right in the 10th. Eric O’Flaherty (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth for the victory while Craig Kimbrel pitched a perfect 10th for his fifth save.
Trailing 4-0 after six innings, Atlanta cut the lead in half when Chris Johnson homered in the seventh and B.J. Upton drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.
Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer off Atlanta starter Julio Teheran in the first to give the Nationals a 2-0 lead. Teheran allowed two more runs in the second, but did not allow a hit over the next four innings to keep Atlanta close. Washington starter Ross Detwiler held the Braves to one run on four hits in seven solid innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Teheran allowed four runs on six hits in six innings. … Harper, who stole his first base of the season, finished 1-for-4 and is hitting .400. … Upton nearly hit his major-league leading seventh homer in the sixth. The ball bounced off the railing at the top of the fence in right-center, but video review upheld the call on the field as a double.
