Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 4: Mike Napoli homered and delivered the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout in the eighth as visiting Boston downed Toronto, spoiling Jose Reyes’ four-hit night.
Napoli’s two-run blast in the fifth was the first home run of the season for the Red Sox, who gave new manager John Farrell his first win against the team he managed the past two seasons. Junichi Tazawa (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing Reyes’ game-tying solo homer in the seventh and Joel Hanrahan collected his second save in as many opportunities.
Reyes doubled in the first, singled in the third and doubled in the fifth before knotting the game at four with his first home run as a Blue Jay following his off-season trade from the Miami Marlins. Esmil Rogers (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
Once Napoli staked Boston to a 4-1 lead with his home run, the Blue Jays countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by Mark DeRosa’s solo shot and Reyes’ RBI double.
But Rogers was unable to hold the Red Sox off the scoreboard as Jonny Gomes drew a one-out walk and Dustin Pedroia moved him to third with a double to deep center. Napoli followed with his groundout to third, plating Gomes, and Will Middlebrooks added an insurance run in the ninth with a line-drive homer.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The fans at the Rogers Centre derisively chanted Farrell’s name throughout the game. Farrell, who managed Toronto to a 154-170 record in two seasons, called the Red Sox his “dream job” after he was traded to Boston along with reliever David Carpenter in exchange for SS Mike Aviles in October. … Red Sox RHP Koji Uehara came on after starter Felix Doubront allowed J.P. Arencibia’s lead-off double in the sixth, but set the Blue Jays down in order. In his career, Uehara has allowed only nine of his 57 inherited baserunners to score. … Reyes was thrown out trying to stretch his second double into a triple in the fifth.
