Dodgers 7, Diamondbacks 5: Hyun-Jin Ryu struck out a career-high nine in his third major-league start and went 3-for-3 at the plate as Los Angeles halted its road struggles against Ian Kennedy and Arizona.
Adrian Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs while Ryu (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits over six frames. Carl Crawford scored twice and added two hits for the Dodgers, who ended a six-game slide at Chase Field. Brandon League tossed a perfect ninth for his fourth save in as many chances.
Kennedy (1-1), who had won all three of his previous home starts against the Dodgers and did not allow a run against them over his last two outings, fell to 24-11 in his career at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks’ ace surrendered six runs on 10 hits and a season-high four walks over 5 2/3 innings.
After flirting with danger in the second and third, Kennedy gave up Gonzalez’s solo blast to begin the fourth. In the fifth, Skip Schumaker’s fly ball found the gap in left-center to score Crawford and Andre Ethier’s RBI single increased the bulge to 3-0 before A.J. Pollock’s groundout plated a run for Arizona.
Los Angeles added three runs in the sixth on Matt Kemp’s two-run single and Gonzalez’s RBI single to shallow right. Three run-scoring pinch hits by Arizona and a solo shot from Martin Prado closed the gap to 6-5, but newly acquired Ramon Hernandez’s RBI double in the ninth gave the Dodgers a two-run cushion.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona SS Cliff Pennington was ejected in the seventh after slamming (and breaking) his bat against the plate after striking out a low strike call from home plate umpire Jim Reynolds. … Ryu became the first Dodger pitcher to record three hits in a game since Randy Wolf did so against the Diamondbacks on Aug. 16, 2009. … Ryu has yet to allow a hit to any of the 13 left-handed hitters he has faced through three starts.
