Rays 12, Orioles 10: Kelly Johnson recorded three hits, including a three-run homer in the third inning, and knocked in four as visiting Tampa Bay took an eight-run lead and held off a furious rally.
Yunel Escobar collected three hits and three RBIs while Desmond Jennings added two hits – including a two-run single – as the Rays topped their season high in runs scored. Jeremy Hellickson (2-2) allowed eight runs on 10 hits over 7 2/3 innings to get the win and Joel Peralta got the final four outs for his first save.
Chris Dickerson’s three-run homer off Kyle Farnsworth capped a six-run eighth inning as the Orioles pulled within 12-10 and brought the tying run to the plate. Baltimore starter Jason Hammel (5-2) gave up 10 hits and seven runs over 4 2/3 innings.
Chris Davis delivered a two-run single in the first for the Orioles and J.J. Hardy’s solo blast in the second pushed Baltimore’s lead to 3-1. James Loney knocked in one run with a sacrifice fly in the third before Johnson hit a 3-2 pitch by Hammel just over the right-field wall as the Rays edged in front 5-3.
Johnson came through again in the fifth, singling home Loney to end Hammel’s evening. The Rays tacked on three more runs in the fifth on a ground-rule RBI double by Escobar and a two-run single by Jennings off reliever Alex Burnett for a 9-3 lead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Rays have scored 28 runs in four games at Camden Yards in Baltimore this season, going 2-2. … Hardy extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his second-inning homer. … Matt Wieters, Manny Machado and Davis each knocked in a pair of runs for the Orioles, who have dropped three straight.
