Orioles 2, Yankees 1 (13): J.J. Hardy hit an RBI double in the 13th inning and Jim Johnson retired New York in order in the bottom half as visiting Baltimore staved off elimination and evened the American League Division Series at two wins apiece.
Rookie Manny Machado led off the 13th with a double against David Phelps (0-1) and advanced to third on Nate McLouth's groundout. Hardy followed with a shot to deep left field that plated Machado with the winning run.
Pedro Strop (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings and Johnson again bounced back from a rough outing to notch his second save of the series.
Baltimore snapped a scoreless tie in the fifth inning, when McLouth led off by depositing a 1-2 offering from Phil Hughes into the seats in right field for his first home run of the postseason. New York knotted the contest in the sixth as Derek Jeter led off with a double and scored on a groundout by Robinson Cano three batters later.
Hughes escaped a major jam in the third as Machado drew a leadoff walk and McLouth doubled. Machado was thrown out at the plate on Hardy's comebacker to Hughes, who proceeded to strike out Chris Davis and induce a groundout by Adam Jones.
Baltimore starter Joe Saunders got out of trouble himself in the bottom of the frame. After Jayson Nix hit a leadoff double, Saunders struck out Jeter, Ichiro Suzuki and Mark Teixeira to keep the game scoreless.
The Orioles' bullpen saved the day in the eighth after Suzuki and Teixeira began the frame with singles. Brian Matusz relieved Luis Ayala and induced a groundout by Cano before Darren O'Day came on to strike out Alex Rodriguez and retire Nick Swisher on a flyout to right.
GAME NOTEBOOK: New York's Russell Martin made a baserunning blunder after drawing a leadoff walk in the fifth. With one out, Martin rounded second base on a deep fly ball hit by Nix that was tracked down by left fielder McLouth, who began a relay that doubled Martin off first to end the inning. ... Rodriguez, who was removed for a pinch hitter for the second straight game, is 2-for-16 with nine strikeouts in the series. ... New York entered having outscored Baltimore 8-0 from the seventh inning on over the first three contests. ... Yankees RHP Joba Chamberlain left the game in the 12th after getting hit on the right elbow by the barrel of Matt Wieters' broken bat.
