Astros 5, Padres 3: J.D. Martinez highlighted a four-run fifth inning with a two-run homer as host Houston prevented San Diego from recording just its second three-game winning streak of the season.
Jed Lowrie also went deep and Jordan Lyles pitched 6 1/3 strong innings for the Astros, who are 4-4 on their 10-game homestand.
Lowrie led off the fifth with a single and scored on a wild pitch later in the frame to give Houston a 2-1 lead. Chris Johnson followed with an RBI single and Martinez launched his 10th blast of the season two batters later to cap the rally.
Lyles (2-4) allowed one run and six hits in halting his personal three-game skid. The 21-year-old walked four and struck out four.
Brett Myers yielded two hits and hit a batter in the ninth before recording his 17th save in 18 chances.
Padres starter Kip Wells (0-1) surrendered five runs - two earned - and seven hits over five innings in his first major-league appearance since 2009 with Cincinnati. The 35-year-old, who was recalled from Triple-A Tucson earlier in the day, had three walks and two strikeouts while falling to 4-10 lifetime against Houston.
San Diego took the lead when Will Venable led off the third inning with his sixth homer of the year, a shot that originally was ruled a triple before the umpires viewed the replay and overturned the call. The Astros quickly answered as Lowrie opened the bottom of the frame with his 14th blast.
Chase Headley delivered a two-run single in the ninth for the Padres, who are 1-1 on their 10-game road trip.
