Troy Tulowitzki belted a solo homer in the ninth inning and Todd Helton highlighted a three-run third with an RBI double for the Rockies.
With the game tied at 3-3, Young pinch-ran for Ramon Hernandez after the latter singled to lead off the eighth inning. Young promptly stole second and scored on Castro's miscue - the Astros' fourth error of the evening.
Acquired in a trade with Baltimore in February, Guthrie (1-0) overcame back-to-back homers by Carlos Lee and Brian Bogusevic in the fourth inning to exit with the lead.
Rex Brothers struck out two in the eighth inning and Rafael Betancourt stranded runners on first and second in the ninth for his first save.
Fernando Rodriguez (0-1) took the loss after yielding one run on one hit in 1 1/2 innings.
After Tulowitzki leveled the contest at 1-1, Helton deposited an offering from Wandy Rodriguez into the left-field corner to plate Dexter Fowler. Helton came around to score on Michael Cuddyer's single to shallow right field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Prior to the contest, the Astros placed shortstop Jed Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained thumb. Lowrie, who was injured on March 28, was acquired from Boston in the offseason. ... Tulowitzki plated Marco Scutaro with Colorado's first run when he launched a sacrifice fly to right field.
