Nationals 7, Marlins 6 (10): Corey Brown lofted a bases-loaded single with one out in the 10th inning as Washington rallied to win for the sixth time in seven games.
The Nationals rallied from a 6-3 eighth-inning deficit on the day the organization shut down ace Stephen Strasburg for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. Strasburg lasted just three innings in Friday’s 9-7 loss. The Nationals maintained their 6 1/2-game lead in the NL East after Atlanta cruised to an 11-3 triumph over the New York Mets later on Saturday.
After a 2-hour, 33-minute rain delay in the middle of the ninth inning, Jayson Werth hit a 3-2 pitch over the center-field wall off Miami reliever Heath Bell to lead off the inning and tie the game at 6-6.
Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond hit back-to-back singles to start the 10th off Chad Gaudin (3-2), putting runners on the corners with no outs. After an international walk and a force out at home, Brown lofted a deep fly to right that dropped for the game-winner.
Drew Storen (2-1) picked up the victory with a scoreless 10th.
Washington pulled within 6-5 in the eighth on Ryan Zimmerman’s 20th homer to left-center, a two-run blast. Jesus Flores hit a solo homer in the third for Washington. Rookie Bryce Harper added his 18th homer in the fifth, a solo shot into the upper deck in right-center.
Miami scored twice in the first. Gorkys Hernandez led off the game with his second homer of the season on a 3-2 pitch. Two hitters later, Giancarlo Stanton hit his 32nd.
Miami starter Mark Buehrle scattered five hits in seven innings, giving up three runs with two walks and five strikeouts. Washington starter Ross Detwiler surrendered seven hits and five runs (three earned) with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Strasburg finished the season 15-6 with a 3.16 ERA and 197 strikeouts in 159 1/3 innings. The right-hander had Tommy John surgery in 2010 and the Nationals announced in spring training he would be on an innings limit this season. … Miami’s Donovan Solano had two hits and scored twice. … Washington LHP Gio Gonzalez was ejected in the first inning by home-plate umpire Todd Tichenor for arguing from the bench.
