Marlins 2, Nationals 1: Mark Buehrle won his fourth straight start after tossing seven sizzling innings as host Miami denied Gio Gonzalez in his bid to become the majors' first 13-game winner.
John Buck snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Buck fisted a fastball to right-center field off Gonzalez (12-4) to plate the speedy Emilio Bonifacio from second base.
The modest offense proved to be just enough for Buehrle (9-8), who allowed one run on six hits in seven innings to pick up the win. Randy Choate struck out rookie Bryce Harper and Steve Cishek recorded the final five outs for his second save.
Gonzalez saw his four-game winning streak come to an end. The Miami native permitted two runs on five hits while striking out nine in six innings.
Carlos Lee opened the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning for the Marlins, who snapped a three-game losing skid.
Jesus Flores had an RBI single in the fifth inning for the Nationals, who failed in their bid to move 17 games over .500 for the first time since July 9, 2005.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington fell to 14-4 in Gonzalez's starts this season. ... Ryan Zimmerman had a double to give the Nationals at least one extra-base hit in all 85 games this season. They are the only team to do so.
