Marlins 4, Red Sox 1: Josh Johnson pitched seven solid innings and rookie Donovan Solano had two RBIs as host Miami snapped a six-game losing streak and handed Boston its fourth straight loss.
Johnson (4-4), who is 4-1 in his last five decisions, allowed one run, four hits and struck out seven as the Marlins scored three times in the first inning to win for the first time on their nine-game homestand.
Boston’s Josh Beckett (4-7), who lost his third straight start, yielded four runs, six hits and struck out five in seven innings while facing his former team for the first time. He retired 14 straight batters before issuing a one-out walk to John Buck in the seventh and didn't allow a hit after the second inning.
The last-place Red Sox, who have lost seven of their last eight, fell 6 1/2 games out of first in the American League East.
Solano’s sacrifice fly in the first inning drove in Jose Reyes, who led off with a triple. Logan Morrison’s double to right field was bobbled by Adrian Gonzalez, allowing Giancarlo Stanton to score, and Gaby Sanchez followed with an RBI single to right put Miami in front 3-0.
Solano’s two-out RBI single in the second made it 4-0.
Johnson retired 11 straight batters before Scott Podsednik singled and Dustin Pedroia doubled with one out in the sixth inning. After Adrian Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly, Johnson escaped further damage when David Ortiz popped out to center.
Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Heath Bell worked around a leadoff walk to Gonzalez in the ninth and struck out Ortiz, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kevin Youkilis to earn his ninth straight save and 13th in 17 chances.
