Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 2: Clay Buchholz won his sixth straight start at Toronto, Daniel Nava had a career-high four hits and David Ortiz homered for the third time in four games for visiting Boston.

Adrian Gonzalez had three hits and combined with Nava for three RBIs and four runs scored as the Red Sox won for the 14th time in their last 21 games. Ortiz added an RBI single.

Buchholz (5-2) allowed two runs and six hits in eighth innings in his longest outing of the season. The first two Blue Jays reached in the first and fifth innings before Buchholz struck out the next batter and got a double play ball each time.

Three of his seven strikeouts came in the sixth inning, when he caught Jose Bautista, Juan Encarnacion and Colby Rasmus looking.

Henderson Alvarez (3-5) yielded four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. He had allowed one run in 12 career innings against Boston.

Yunel Escobar and David Cooper homered for Toronto, which was coming off a three-game sweep of Baltimore. It was Cooper's first major league homer.

Ortiz finished a 10-pitch at-bat with an opposite field homer to left – his 13th – in the second inning before Gonzalez’s RBI single in the third put Boston ahead 2-0.

The Red Sox took a 3-1 lead in the sixth on Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s fielder’s choice grounder after Nava singled and Gonzalez doubled to start the inning. It may have been a double play ball, but Alvarez did not cover first.

Boston blew the game open with four runs in the seventh on Scott Podsednik’s infield hit, Nava’s double, Gonzalez’s single and Ortiz’s single.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Boston’s Kevin Youkilis was given the night off by manager Bobby Valentine, who didn’t want him playing three games on artificial turf. Youkilis is 10-for-32 with two homers and three RBIs in nine games since returning from a back injury. … Boston’s Dustin Pedroia fielded grounders before Friday’s game but missed his fourth straight contest with a torn muscle in his right thumb. Pedroia, who suffered the injury against Detroit on Monday, said he could return sometime this weekend. … Alvarez was hit in the lower left leg by Mike Aviles’ grounder in the fifth inning, the second straight game a Blue Jays pitcher was struck by a batted ball. Brandon Morrow left Wednesday’s contest after taking a line drive off the right shin. … Boston had five doubles and leads the majors by a wide margin with 137. ... Red Sox reliever Scott Atchison pitched the ninth for his 14th consecutive scoreless appearance covering 18 2/3 innings.
