Justin Smoak had an RBI double to snap a tie in the seventh inning and rookie Michael Pineda tossed six solid frames as the Seattle Mariners recorded a 2-1 road triumph over the Oakland Athletics on Monday.
Josh Bard, who was playing in place of the injured Miguel Olivo, belted a solo homer in the sixth inning as Seattle collected its third win in four games.
With the contest tied at 1-1, Smoak plated Brendan Ryan for his second RBI in as many days. Prior to this modest outburst, Smoak went 10 games without driving in a run.
Pineda (8-5) yielded one run on two hits and struck out seven to defeat the Athletics for the second time this season. He tossed six scoreless innings in an eventual 4-0 victory over Oakland on April 22.
Aaron Laffey and David Pauley bridged the gap to All-Star Brandon League, who struck out Hideki Matsui and Chris Carter in the ninth to secure his 23rd save of the season.
Making his first start since May 18, Brandon McCarthy (1-5) yielded two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings to suffer his fifth straight loss.
Kurt Suzuki had two hits - including an RBI single in the second inning - for Oakland, which fell to 3-4 on its current nine-game homestand.
