Rookie Mark Trumbo hit his first career grand slam and Vernon Wells snapped a tie with a solo shot in the fifth inning as the Los Angeles Angels went on to post a 10-6 home triumph over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday.

Wells added an RBI single and Peter Bourjos also went deep for the Angels, who climbed within 3 1/2 games of first-place Texas in the American League West.

Trumbo continued his campaign for AL Rookie of the Year honors by giving Los Angeles a 4-0 lead in the first inning with his 25th homer of the season. After Trevor Plouffe's three-run double in the fourth tied the game at 6-6, Wells belted a two-out shot off Phil Dumatrait (1-3) in the fifth to put the Angels ahead for good.

Jered Weaver (16-7) extended his home winning streak to six despite allowing six runs over five innings. The 28-year-old, who struck out eight, has surrendered 13 runs in 11 frames over his last two starts.

Twins starter Brian Duensing yielded five runs while recording just four outs before leaving with a strained right oblique.

Plouffe finished with four RBIs and Danny Valencia homered for Minnesota, which has lost 12 of 16.
