Adam LaRoche belted a two-run homer in the 11th inning to lift the Washington Nationals to a 5-3 victory over the Florida Marlins on Thursday in the finale of their three-game series in Miami.
LaRoche's first home run off Edward Mujica (1-1) made a winner of reliever Todd Coffey (1-0), who worked a perfect 10th inning and struck out one. Sean Burnett worked around a hit in the 11th for his second save of the season.
Jayson Werth hit his first home run as a member of the Nationals - a solo shot off Marlins starter Josh Johnson in the fourth inning. Johnson allowed three runs — two earned — on four hits over six innings. He struck out six.
Nationals starter John Lannan allowed three runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. Lannan left with a 3-2 lead after allowing back-to-back hits to start the sixth, but the tying run scored on Emilio Bonifacio's groundout later in the inning.
Ian Desmond and Ryan Zimmerman had two hits apiece for the Nationals.
