Jo-Jo Reyes avoided a dubious place in history on Monday, snapping a 28-start winless streak with the first complete game of his career as the Toronto Blue Jays crushed the visiting Cleveland Indians, 11-1, on Monday.
Rajai Davis scored three runs and drove in a pair and four different players had multiple RBIs for the Blue Jays, who have won four straight while averaging over nine runs.
Reyes (1-4) matched the record shared by Matt Keough (1978-79) and Cliff Curtis (1910-11) last week when a loss to the New York Yankees gave him 28 consecutive starts without recording a win. Though the left-handed Reyes had allowed two runs or fewer in five of his 10 starts this season, he had been cursed with some poor run support.
That was not the case on Monday, as Toronto grabbed a 2-0 lead on Jayson Nix’s homer in the third and then took the suspense out of it with a seven-run rally in the fourth to knock Fausto Carmona (3-6) out of the game.
Reyes, who had not won since June 13, 2008 when he was with the Atlanta Braves, yielded eight hits and struck out four.
