Nick Swisher went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs as the New York Yankees snapped out of their offensive funk, drubbing the visiting Chicago White Sox 12-3 on Thursday night to salvage a split of the four-game series.
CC Sabathia (2-1) allowed three runs – all unearned – on seven hits in seven innings to improve to 17-4 lifetime against Chicago. He struck out six and walked one.
Brett Gardner homered and doubled and Curtis Granderson drove in two runs for New York, which scored more in a six-run fifth inning than it had in the previous three games combined.
New York unloaded on Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (2-3) and reliever Tony Pena in the fifth, getting a leadoff homer from Gardner, an RBI triple from Granderson and run-scoring double by Alex Rodriguez.
Swisher, who was 0-for-17 in his last five games, capped his big night with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh.
Jackson allowed six runs on four hits and five walks. Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin drove in a run apiece for Chicago.
