Jake Westbrook turned in one of his best starts since arriving in the National League to outduel Jorge De La Rosa and lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
Allen Craig and Mike Pagnozzi each drove in runs for the Cardinals, who have won seven of their last nine games.
Westbrook (10-11) allowed four hits and struck out nine while walking one over 7 2/3 innings. The veteran sinkerballer induced 10 groundouts in his second scoreless outing since joining St. Louis from the Cleveland Indians prior to the trading deadline.
He had yielded two hits through the first seven innings and got two quick outs in the eighth before allowing a single to Seth Smith and a double to Dexter Fowler. He followed by intentionally walking Jonathan Herrera to load the bases. Left-hander Trevor Miller then came on and retired Carlos Gonzalez on a ground ball to the mound to end the threat.
De La Rosa (8-7) was charged with three runs on five hits while walking four and striking out one.
Ryan Franklin worked the ninth for his 27th save.
