Brandon Phillips, Jonny Gomes and Drew Stubbs each homered as the playoff-bound Cincinnati Reds pounded Brett Myers and the Houston Astros 9-1 on Thursday.
Ryan Hanigan added two hits and an RBI and Joey Votto scored a run for the Reds, who put most of their starters back in the lineup after resting them all on Wednesday.
Myers (14-8), who had gone at least six innings in each of his previous 32 starts this season, just did not have it on Thursday, surrendering a two-run homer to Stubbs in the second and getting touched for three more in the fifth.
Myers came within one out of making it through his entire season with six-innings or more, but home runs by Phillips and Gomes in the sixth finally forced him out after 5 2/3 frames.
Bronson Arroyo (17-10) had no such problems for Cincinnati, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings while striking out four in his final regular-season start. The veteran right-hander has not allowed more than two runs in a start this month and figures to get the ball in one of the Reds’ first two playoff games next week.
Jeff Keppinger homered for the Astros, who have lost seven of nine.
