Drew Stubbs drove in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Chicago Cubs, 3-2, on Thursday.

Travis Wood made a sparkling major-league debut and Scott Rolen tripled in a run for the Reds, who have won eight of 10 to stay ahead of the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.

Trailing 2-0 in the eighth, Chicago worked a pair of walks leading off the frame against the rookie Wood. Nick Masset came on in relief and, after a sacrifice bunt by Kosuke Fukudome, allowed a two-run single to Tyler Colvin to knot the game at 2-2 and rip away Wood’s chance at the win.

Bobby Howry (1-2) started the 10th for the Cubs and got Rolen to ground out before yielding a pinch-hit single to Miguel Cairo. Sean Marshall came on in relief and gave up a single to Jay Bruce, putting runners at first and third. Stubbs then grounded into a fielder’s choice, pushing Cairo across with the go-ahead run.

It made a winner of Jordan Smith (1-0), who tossed one perfect inning before Francisco Cordero allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth but still recorded the save.

Wood, 23, was one of the pitchers that got passed over in the spring when Mike Leake came out of nowhere to make Cincinnati’s opening day roster. Finally given his chance to make an impression, the left-hander did not disappoint, allowing two runs and two hits while walking three and striking out four. He was lifted after allowing back-to-back walks leading off the eighth.
