Pinch-hitter Chris Synder singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks secured a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday.
After Justin Upton led off the 14th with a double, Fernando Nieve (2-4) intentionally walked Miguel Montero before striking our Mark Reynolds. That brought Synder to the plate and he delivered with a long single to left that scored Upton to end the marathon affair.
Blaine Boyer (2-2), the sixth Arizona pitcher used, earned the win with two spotless innings of relief. The bullpen combined to allow just one hit over the final eight frames.
Before the game-winning heroics, neither team had scored since Rod Barajas’ solo home run for the Mets in the sixth inning tied things at 3-3.
Rusty Ryal had four hits and an RBI and Reynolds and Chris Young each also drove in a run for Arizona, which swept the three-game series.
Angel Pagan and Carlos Beltran finished with an RBI apiece for the Mets, who used seven pitchers in the losing effort.
