The Tampa Bay Rays got to Cliff Lee for three runs in the eighth inning to break a tie and carry them to an 8-3 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.
Evan Longoria was among six players to drive in at least a run for the Rays, who improved to 11-1 on the road and sent the Mariners to their fifth consecutive loss.
Matt Garza (5-1) went eight innings, allowing five hits with five strikeouts and one walk to outduel Lee.
The Rays got three runs on four hits and an error in the eighth to go-ahead for good. Longoria singled - running his hitting streak to 11 games - to score Carl Crawford and Ben Zobrist scored on a line out by Carlos Pena. B.J. Upton added a run-scoring single.
Lee (0-1) lost his first game with the Mariners, allowing five runs – four earned – on 10 hits in eight innings. He had five strikeouts and still has not walked a batter in his two starts this season.
Franklin Gutierrez gave Seattle a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth. The long ball was Seattle’s first in 76 innings. Gutierrez had the team’s previous homer on April 25.
