Robinson Cano snapped a draw in the ninth inning with a solo home run and Mark Teixeira added a two-run blast as the New York Yankees edged the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-4, on Saturday.
Nick Swisher added a solo shot for the Yankees, who pushed their lead over the Rays to two games in the American League East.
Knotted at 4-4 in the ninth with closer Rafael Soriano (2-1) on the mound, Cano came up with one down and none on and gave New York its first lead of the game, driving a 1-0 pitch deep down the right-field line for his 21st homer of the season.
David Robertson (2-3), who struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning, got credit for the win and Mariano Rivera closed it out in the ninth for his 22nd save.
The Rays took the lead in the third when Carl Crawford snapped a 1-1 deadlock with an RBI single to left field and extended it to 3-1 on Jason Bartlett’s sacrifice fly in the fifth. But New York came storming back in the sixth when Teixeira’s two-run blast evened it at 3-3.
Tampa Bay grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the frame on Matt Joyce’s solo shot, but the Yankees answered in kind in the seventh when Swisher’s 20th blast made it 4-4.
