Phil Hughes took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and allowed just one hit over 7 1/3 innings in helping the New York Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the host Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night.

Oakland’s Eric Chavez led off the top of the eighth with a hard shot that bounced off Hughes for an infield single. By the time Hughes located the ball, Chavez was easily aboard first base with the first of just three Oakland hits on the night.

Hughes (2-0) struck out a career-high 10 and walked two. He was relieved after walking Gabe Gross with one out in the eighth. Oakland’s run was charged to Hughes when pinch-hitter Jake Fox delivered a run-scoring single off reliever Joba Chamberlain.

New York got the run back in the ninth on Brett Gardner’s two-out single that scored Curtis Granderson from second.

Oakland put runners on first and third in the ninth but Mariano Rivera induced Kevin Kouzmanoff to fly to center field for his sixth save in six chances this season.

After allowing a first-inning walk to Daric Barton, Hughes retired 20 consecutive Oakland hitters prior to Chavez’s single.

New York scored twice in the fourth inning with back-to-back triples by Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano plating the first run and Jorge Posada’s groundout scoring Cano with the second.

Ben Sheets (1-1) pitched six innings for the A’s, allowing just two runs and four hits.
