Carlos Pena hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to give the Tampa Bay Rays a wild 8-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night.
Baltimore reliever Matt Albers (0-1) walked the first two batters in the 10th before Pena hit a towering shot into the right field seats to break a tie.
Ty Wigginton hit a solo homer for the Orioles in the bottom half of the inning – his second of the game – but it wasn’t enough.
Pena finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and Evan Longoria drove in two runs for the Rays.
The Orioles forced extra’s when Luke Scott hit a two-run, pinch-hit home run off Randy Choate in the bottom of the eighth to even the game at 5-5.
Lance Cormier (1-0) got the victory against his former team and Rafael Soriano earned his second save.
Baltimore starter Brian Matusz baffled Tampa Bay through seven innings, giving up just two hits as the Orioles held a 3-0 lead. But the Rays got to Matusz and two Orioles relievers for five runs and seven hits in the eighth to go up 5-3.
The Orioles now have lost five straight games.
