Padres 3, Dodgers 1: Seth Smith delivered a pinch-hit home run and Chris Denorfia added a two-run single in the eighth inning as host San Diego rallied past Los Angeles.

Dale Thayer (1-0) tossed a flawless eighth inning for San Diego before handing it off to closer Huston Street, who set down the side in order in the ninth for his first save. Denorfia, who robbed Adrian Gonzalez of a potential extra-base hit on a deep fly ball to right in the fourth, finished 2-for-4.

Brian Wilson (0-1) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) without recording an out in the eighth after Los Angeles starter Hyun-Jin Ryu worked seven scoreless innings. A.J. Ellis went 2-for-3 and Carl Crawford drove in the Dodgers’ only run with a RBI single in the fifth.

Ryu retired 16 batters in a row between the second and seventh innings while Crawford put the Dodgers on the board with a line-drive single to left, but San Diego quickly reversed its fortunes once Ryu departed after 88 pitches. Smith greeted Wilson with a deep shot to right on a 2-0 slider to lead off the eighth before a walk and an error by the Dodgers’ reliever helped set the stage for a two-run single by Denorfia.

Relievers Chris Perez and Paco Rodriguez struck out the side after Wilson was pulled, but three San Diego relievers set down the final nine Dodgers’ they faced. Street fanned Juan Uribe while retiring Andre Ethier and Ellis on weak groundballs to third to end it.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ryu, who allowed three hits and walked three while striking out seven, was attempting to become the first player since the Milwaukee Brewers’ CC Sabathia in 2008 to start and win two regular-season team games in a row. … San Diego starter Andrew Cashner yielded one run on four hits over six innings as the Padres defeated Los Angeles for only the second time in its last nine meetings. … Eight of the nine runs the Dodgers have allowed in three games this season have come in the eighth or ninth inning.
