Reds 3, Dodgers 2: Brandon Phillips belted a two-run homer and Homer Bailey tossed seven strong innings as visiting Cincinnati snapped its four-game losing streak.
Bailey (5-3) allowed two runs on five hits and one walk while striking out six, and two relievers bridged the gap to Aroldis Chapman, who worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Brayan Pena recorded three hits and Todd Frazier added two and scored twice for the Reds, who grabbed an early lead on Phillips’ two-run blast in the first inning.
Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (3-2) settled in after Phillips’ homer and finished with nine strikeouts while yielding three runs over seven frames. Yasiel Puig led off the sixth with a shot to right-center field to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Los Angeles went quietly in the final three frames and fell to 2-20 when trailing after six innings.
Bailey turned in his fifth quality start in his last six outings as he outdueled Kershaw, who tied a career high by allowing five extra-base hits. The Dodgers pulled within 2-1 when Justin Turner doubled to begin the fifth and later scored on a passed ball, but Bailey escaped a two-on, one-out jam by inducing Andre Ethier to ground into an inning-ending double play.
The Reds moved ahead 3-1 in the sixth as Frazier doubled to begin the inning, moved to third on Phillips’ groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Los Angeles went 0-for-7 with runners in position and stranded Dee Gordon at third base in the eighth as Jonathan Broxton got Hanley Ramirez to fly out to right field.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Dodgers placed OF Carl Crawford on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain and recalled OF Jamie Romak from Triple-A Albuquerque. Romak grounded out to second base in his first career at-bat in the seventh. … Los Angeles challenged a safe call on Zack Cozart’s fielder’s choice in the seventh inning, but the ruling was upheld after 2 minutes and 2 seconds. … The Dodgers’ Matt Kemp made his first start in left field since 2006 and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.
