Preview Roundups
December 27, 2016
Pittsburgh at New Jersey 7:00 PM ET
Captain Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins had every reason to celebrate entering the Christmas break as the former scored in his third straight game to help the latter improve to 9-1-2 in December with a 4-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Friday. The Penguins and Devils won't have to wait long to renew acquaintances as the Metropolitan Division rivals reconvene at the Prudential Center on Tuesday.
Washington at NY Islanders 7:00 PM ET
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin routinely has gashed the New York Islanders throughout his impressive career - just not this season. After being held without a point in each of the first three contests, Ovechkin looks to resume his dominance of the cellar-dwelling Islanders on Tuesday as the Metropolitan Division rivals return from the Christmas break for a tilt at the Barclays Center.
Ottawa at NY Rangers 7:00 PM ET
Fortunately for the New York Rangers, there was some rest for the weary in the form of a much-needed three-day holiday break following a pair of lopsided defeats. After being rendered defenseless by Pittsburgh and Minnesota, the Rangers will attempt to get back on track when they host another hot team in the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night.
Boston at Columbus 7:00 PM ET
The Christmas break couldn't come at a better time for most NHL teams but perhaps not for the Columbus Blue Jackets, who will be hoping the three days off will not slow the momentum of the best run in franchise history. The rampaging Blue Jackets take aim at their 13th consecutive victory when they play host to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.
Buffalo at Detroit 7:30 PM ET
Two teams sitting outside the playoff picture in the Atlantic Division but hoping for a spark to ignite a run meet Tuesday, when the Buffalo Sabres visit the Detroit Red Wings. The last-place Sabres are winless in four contests (0-2-2) and sit near the bottom of the league in scoring (2.1 goals per game) while Detroit is just two points better and still searching for the form that led to an early six-game winning streak.
Minnesota at Nashville 8:00 PM ET
The Minnesota Wild opened the month of December on an ominous note, losing in a shootout at Calgary to remain winless on a five-game road trip. How things have turned for the resurgent Wild, who have yet to lose in regulation this month and will carry a franchise-record 10-game winning streak into Tuesday night's matchup at the Nashville Predators.
Winnipeg at Chicago 8:30 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks come out of the holiday break with the most points in the Western Conference and will be looking for revenge when the improving Winnipeg Jets pay them a visit on Tuesday. The Blackhawks lost their last two before the break after earning at least one point in seven consecutive games (6-0-1) - a run that followed a 2-1 home setback against Winnipeg on Dec. 4.
Calgary at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
The Calgary Flames have won eight of 11 to put themselves within five points of the Pacific Division penthouse while the Colorado Avalanche have dropped eight straight (0-7-1) at Pepsi Center to make themselves comfortable in the cellar of the Central Division. The Flames look to continue their strong play on the road Tuesday when they return from their Christmas break to face the sputtering Avalanche.
Dallas at Arizona 9:00 PM ET
The Dallas Stars look to take advantage of a struggling opponent as they take a brief break between homestands on Tuesday to visit the Arizona Coyotes. Dallas completed a successful five-game stretch at home prior to the holiday break, finishing at 3-1-1 by edging Los Angeles in overtime on Friday.
San Jose at Anaheim 10:00 PM ET
The Anaheim Ducks hope they will recognize their surroundings at Honda Center on Tuesday, when they face off against the Pacific Division-leading San Jose Sharks in a rare home contest. Anaheim is in the midst of a stretch during which they play eight of nine on the road and hits the ice in its own rink after completing a 2-3-1 trek prior to the holiday break with a 2-1 overtime loss at Ottawa on Thursday.
