Preview Roundups
December 22, 2016
Carolina at Buffalo 7:00 PM ET
The Buffalo Sabres are coming off back-to-back shootout losses on the road, but they get a chance to avenge one of those defeats when they host the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Five of Buffalo's last seven games have gone beyond regulation, including a 2-1 setback on Carolina on Saturday that snapped the Sabres' four-game winning streak in the series.
Philadelphia at New Jersey 7:00 PM ET
The New Jersey Devils aim to end their downward spiral when they host one of the NHL's hottest teams in the Metropolitan Divison-rival Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday. New Jersey is looking to snap a winless streak that reached seven games (0-6-1) with Tuesday's 5-1 home setback against Nashville.
Pittsburgh at Columbus 7:00 PM ET
The Columbus Blue Jackets have skyrocketed up the Metropolitan Division rankings on the strength of a franchise-best 10-game winning streak and 12-game point streak (11-0-1), which is one shy of matching the club record from May 18-April 11, 2015. The Blue Jackets look to leapfrog the first-place Pittsburgh Penguins and gain a share of the league's top point total (Chicago, 48) on Thursday when the second contest of a four-game road trip takes them to PPG Paints Arena.
Minnesota at Montreal 7:30 PM ET
The Minnesota Wild have a chance to tie and break a franchise record for consecutive wins, but they will have to run a mini-gauntlet of sorts to reach either milestone. Riding an eight-game winning streak, the red-hot Wild will kick off a three-game road trip at the Atlantic Division-leading Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night before facing the New York Rangers 24 hours later.
Anaheim at Ottawa 7:30 PM ET
The Ottawa Senators return home riding a three-game winning streak and loaded with confidence when they meet the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday in the final game for both teams prior to the Christmas break. Ottawa defeated the Blackhawks 4-3 on Tuesday, snapping a seven-game losing streak in Chicago for its first victory there since 2001, and sits second in the Atlantic Division - five points behind Montreal as Mike Condon continues to hold down the fort in goal.
St. Louis at Tampa Bay 7:30 PM ET
The Tampa Bay Lightning continue adding players to their injury list, but are beginning to register a few points as well with a pair of victories and a shootout loss in the last four games. The Lightning look to keep their momentum going through the Christmas break when they start Andrei Vasilevskiy in goal against the visiting St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.
Boston at Florida 7:30 PM ET
Veteran forward Jaromir Jagr and goaltender Roberto Luongo look to continue their climb up the ladder on a pair of impressive NHL all-time lists Thursday when the Florida Panthers play the second contest of a five-game homestand against the Boston Bruins. Jagr notched three assists in Florida's 4-3 shootout victory over Buffalo on Tuesday to pull even with Mark Messier for second place in points (1,887) while Luongo made 33 saves to move into a tie for fifth place in wins (447) with Terry Sawchu
Los Angeles at Nashville 8:00 PM ET
The Nashville Predators have tightened up defensively in the absence of P.K. Subban, yielding just three goals with the 27-year-old blue-liner sidelined three games by an upper-body injury. Subban could return to the lineup on Thursday as the Predators open a three-game homestand against a Los Angeles Kings team playing the sixth contest of its nine-game road trip.
Toronto at Colorado 9:00 PM ET
Returning home isn't necessarily an advantage for the Colorado Avalanche, who will attempt to halt a four-game slide when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night. Their current skid notwithstanding, the Avalanche also have dropped seven consecutive games at home (0-6-1) and are seeking their first win at the Pepsi Center since Nov. 15.
Winnipeg at Vancouver 10:00 PM ET
The Vancouver Canucks have an opportunity to sweep a two-game set on home ice from the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday, but despite Tuesday’s 4-1 victory, coach Willie Desjardins is looking for a better start from his team. The Canucks trailed 1-0 after a lackluster opening period before taking control of the game in the final two periods, riding two goals from Jannik Hansen.
