Preview Roundups
April 12, 2014
Buffalo at Boston 12:30 PM ET
The NHL's best and worst teams meet at TD Garden on Saturday afternoon as the Boston Bruins look to secure the second Presidents' Trophy in franchise history should they defeat the reeling Buffalo Sabres. The Bruins last finished a season with the most points in 1989-90 but have stumbled to four losses in their last five games. One could understand if the Sabres don't shed a tear for Boston's plight, as the cellar-dwelling club has lost five in a row and 16 of its last 18 (2-15-1).
Philadelphia at Pittsburgh 3:00 PM ET
While the Pittsburgh Penguins are locked in as the Metropolitan Division champions, the Philadelphia Flyers can finish in a variety of different spots as the postseason nears. With a potential Eastern Conference first-round playoff meeting in the cards, the Keystone State rivals wrap up their regular-season series in Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Flyers dropped the first meeting with the Penguins before rolling off three straight victories.
NY Rangers at Montreal 7:00 PM ET
The New York Rangers have secured home-ice advantage for the first round of the playoffs. The Montreal Canadiens can give themselves a chance for the same opportunity should they record at least one point in Saturday's season finale against the visiting Rangers. Tampa Bay skated to a 3-2 triumph over Columbus on Friday to move one point ahead of Montreal in the race for second place in the Atlantic Division.
Toronto at Ottawa 7:00 PM ET
The Ottawa Senators attempt to avoid a season sweep in the Battle of Ontario when they host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night in a matchup of two teams playing out the string. Although the Senators are seeking their fourth straight win, they have lost six in a row to the Maple Leafs - including all three meetings this season. There is widespread speculation that coach Paul MacLean could be gone after Ottawa failed to make the postseason for only the third time since 1996.
Columbus at Florida 7:00 PM ET
The Columbus Blue Jackets try to set a franchise record for points and head into the playoffs on a high note when they visit the Florida Panthers on Saturday. The Blue Jackets are one point shy of their total of 92 in 2008-09 – the only other time they made the postseason – and are even in points with Philadelphia for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Florida attempts to avoid finishing with fewer than 30 wins in a full season for the first time since 2003-04.
Chicago at Nashville 8:00 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks are still waiting to see who their first-round playoff opponent will be as they prepare to visit the Nashville Predators in their regular-season finale. The Blackhawks had the look of a team with nothing on the line Friday night, turning in a lackluster performance in a 4-0 loss at Washington that snapped a four-game winning streak. The Blackhawks have lost three of four meetings to the Predators this season, including a 7-2 drubbing in Nashville on Nov. 16.
San Jose at Phoenix 9:00 PM ET
The San Jose Sharks conclude their regular season when they visit the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday in a tuneup for the postseason. San Jose, which will face Los Angeles in the first round of the playoffs, prevented Colorado from clinching the Central Division by posting a 5-1 triumph on Friday. Martin Havlat recorded a natural hat trick in a 9:38 span in the third period and Patrick Marleau added a goal and an assist as the Sharks snapped their two-game slide.
Vancouver at Edmonton 10:00 PM ET
The Edmonton Oilers say goodbye to "Captain Canada" when they wrap up the regular season against the visiting Vancouver Canucks on Saturday. Ryan Smyth, who was drafted sixth overall in 1994 and spent 14 1/2 of his 19 NHL seasons in Edmonton, on Friday announced his retirement following the contest against Vancouver.
Anaheim at Los Angeles 10:30 PM ET
The Anaheim Ducks have wrapped up the Pacific Division title and suddenly find themselves in position to snatch the top seed in the Western Conference entering Saturday's matchup at the Los Angeles Kings. The Ducks, who hold a one-point lead over St. Louis and Colorado, can clinch the No. 1 seed with a victory over Los Angeles or by beating the visiting Avalanche on Sunday. The matchup with Colorado will also mark the final regular-season game of Teemu Selanne's storied career.
