Preview Roundups
March 17, 2015
Pittsburgh at New Jersey 7:00 PM ET
After recording a 7-1-1 mark during a nine-game stretch, the high-octane Pittsburgh Penguins have been slowed considerably by injuries over the last two contests. The Penguins will begin life without former Hart Trophy winner Evgeni Malkin and fellow forward Patric Hornqvist when they open a three-game road trip against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. Malkin has missed the majority of the last two contests after he suffered a lower-body injury in a 2-0 setback to Boston on Saturday afternoon.
Ottawa at Carolina 7:00 PM ET
The surging Ottawa Senators have closed within five points of the second wild card in the Eastern Conference entering their matchup at the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. Ottawa has ripped off 11 victories in 13 games (11-1-1) behind the sensational play of rookie Andrew Hammond, who is the second goaltender in league history to begin his career by yielding two goals or fewer in his first 11 starts. Ottawa has surrendered nine goals in losing both meetings to Carolina this season.
Buffalo at Boston 7:30 PM ET
The Boston Bruins have lost only once in regulation in the last nine games but their hold on the second wild card in the Eastern Conference is becoming more precarious by the day. The Bruins look to bounce back from a loss at the Washington Capitals when they host the league-worst Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday. Boston's lead for the final playoff slot has been sliced to five points over the Ottawa Senators, who have a game in hand and will host the Bruins on Thursday night.
Montreal at Florida 7:30 PM ET
With six losses in their last eight games (2-4-2), the Montreal Canadiens hardly are resembling a team that is contending for the playoffs - let alone in the mix for the Presidents' Trophy. The Canadiens look to get back on track when they wrap up a three-game road trip against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday. Montreal suffered its fourth setback in as many meetings with Tampa Bay on Monday, dropping a 4-2 decision to fall even in points with the Lightning atop the Atlantic Division.
Minnesota at Nashville 8:00 PM ET
The Nashville Predators begin a three-game homestand when the Minnesota Wild pay a visit on Tuesday. It is the fourth of five meetings between the Central Division rivals after Nashville won twice at Minnesota and the Wild prevailed 4-2 in Music City on Feb. 26. The Predators are even in points with St. Louis despite mustering just two wins in their last 10 games, while Minnesota is 5-2-0 in March as it tries to secure a wild-card berth.
San Jose at Winnipeg 8:00 PM ET
The San Jose Sharks do not have much time to dwell on allowing four third-period goals en route to a loss on Saturday, kicking off a seven-game road trip Tuesday at the Winnipeg Jets in pursuit of the final Western Conference playoff spot. The Sharks trail Los Angeles by five points for the eighth seed after the Kings edged Arizona on Monday. “We move on now and find a way to win in Winnipeg,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said after the team's 6-2 loss to Chicago.
NY Islanders at Chicago 8:30 PM ET
The Chicago Blackhawks' sizzling surge has put them back in contention for the Central Division title while the New York Islanders are rapidly losing ground in the Metropolitan. The Blackhawks vie for their seventh win in nine contests when they host the Islanders on Tuesday. Patrick Sharp ended a 19-game goal drought by scoring twice as Chicago skated to a 6-2 victory over San Jose on Saturday.
St. Louis at Calgary 9:00 PM ET
The St. Louis Blues are tied with the Nashville Predators atop the Central Division with two games in hand, but they still have a difficult path to navigate as they continue a six-game road trip at the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. St. Louis has won four of five after kicking off the trek with a 3-0 victory at Dallas on Sunday and is also in the mix for the Presidents' Trophy. The Blues are 3-0-1 in their last four versus the Flames, including a 4-1 home victory on Oct. 11.
Philadelphia at Vancouver 10:00 PM ET
The Vancouver Canucks are getting healthy at the right time and are serving notice that they will be a tough out in the Stanley Cup playoffs - if they get there. Vancouver tries to increase its precarious hold on second place in the Pacific Division when it hosts the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday, and with players such as defenseman Kevin Bieksa and center Brad Richardson back in the lineup, a healthy competition for playing time has emerged.
